February 21, 2006 PTO Meeting Minutes
PTO President Cassie DeJarnette called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. We moved from the cafeteria to the library for a better seating arrangement. Members in attendance were: Cassie DeJarnette, Lynda Marcoux, Jessica Bivens, Mary Yaun, Sharon Dowdy, Missy McCallen, Nan Shugart, Jennifer Melton, Vickie Quick, Ordalis Mountain and Bruce McMaster (intern working with Mrs. Blevins).
PrincipalŐs report - Missy McCallen reported for Mrs. Goins. She thanked the PTO for having Mike Thaler. He was overwhelmed by his reception at Glenwood. As a result, Glenwood introduced a new corner in the library called Kids are Authors, where kids write their own books and stories. Mr. Thaler may return to Tennessee to teach a class on writing books at UT. He also made a picture on the wall near the lost & found of one of his characters. Next week students will receive books by Thaler.
McCallen also announced that Glenwood's reading month is going well. The school goal is 100,000 reading minutes by the end of the month. In the third week, students have already read 90,000 minutes! The student will have an assembly in the gym and receive neon balls.
Nikki Lee is now the "top unrated chess champion" after her second tournament. The first one was to qualify. McCallen thanked the PTO for providing a hotel and dinner for Nikki. This was a new experience for Nikki, and she was delighted. She also earned a trophy.
The fourth grade safety patrol will visit Washington D.C. the week after school is out. Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Ridener and Mrs. McCallen will chaperone. Three patrols have sponsors and full scholarships for the trip. An Applebee's pancake breakfast will be held in April as a fundraiser.
The kindergarten musical has been moved to March 31st at 9 a.m.
Minutes - January's minutes were available for review. Sharon Dowdy moved that the minutes be accepted. McCallen seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
TreasurerŐs Report - The Treasurer's Report was distributed for review. Nan Shugart moved that it be accepted. Jessica Bivens seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
Committee Reports
Playground
Nan Shugart reported that Mrs. Ridener purchased $1600 of much needed
new equipment for the playground. An all-terrain rack to transport
new balls, jump ropes, lemon twists, hula hoops, shin guards and
rackets was the biggest purchase. McCallen brought the rack into the
library for display. Shugart asked for other ideas for sports
equipment for kids who aren't into team sports to add to the cart.
The cart is light and on wheels so students can pull it out to the
playground and bring it back in.
Shugart said a new mulch sidewalk was laid from the buss ramp to the ECC classroom so students and parents have easier access and don't have to walk in the grass. Shugart asked the Rogers Group to fix the muddy area on the blacktop. They agreed to work with the maintenance director on this project. Glenwood will also replace the basketball nets and remove rusted ones as well as lower the goals.
Bookfair
Shugart passed out a information sheet about the Spring Book Fair.
The theme is Camp Read a Book: Let the Book Bugs Bite! Shugart is
looking for volunteers to help out with the book fair. She will be
retiring from her position as book fair coordinator and is looking
for a replacement. She hopes she can train new volunteers during the
upcoming Spring Book Fair.

T-Shirts
Lynda Marcoux reported that the T-shirt Committee, which consists of
four members, decided on the navy blue tie-dye t-shirts with the
yellow full front logo of Glenwood. The shirts will sell for about
$10 plus a mark up of $3.50 to cover shipping. Marcoux said long
sleeve shirts and hooded t-shirts (long or short sleeve) as well as
sweatshirts will be available. She wanted input on whether polo
shirts and/or shorts would sell. The t-shirts will raise money for
the yearbook. McCallen said the t-shirts should bring in the needed
$400.
Marcoux mentioned that Pam Wyatt (who wasn't in attendance due to her daughter's accident) had an idea to use the monogrammed polo shirts for Teacher Appreciation Week. They were considering that each student could bring $1.00 to cover the cost of the shirts. McCallen suggested $2.00 to include all teachers (special ed, etc.).
Fundraiser
Cassie DeJarnette gave a fundraiser recap. For the first time
Glenwood had a post-collect with Mountain Empire Promotions. The
leftover orders, which weren't picked up or returned, were sent to
DeJarnette's house. She will sell them for the PTO. Unfortunately the
PTO lost $500 from unwanted orders and orders not picked up.
DeJarnette reported that the company was easy to work with and they
met to pursue next year. She is unsure who will head up the committee
next year. Due to family illness, she will not be able to chair the
fundraising committee. She had some options for next year's
fundraiser which were available for review after the meeting. One
option was Smokey Mountain cookie dough. This company also sponsored
the mega party.
Grandparents Day
Amy Morgan did not attend the meeting, but DeJarnette spoke with her.
Grandparent's Day will be March 17th, which is the Friday before
Spring Break. Grandparents and "Grandfriends" will be invited for
breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and will be allowed to visit their
grandchild's classroom for 30 minutes. Estimated departure will be 10
- 10:30 a.m. Grandparents can stay for lunch but breakfast is the
main focus this year to avoid the crowds and chaos that we had last
year. Grandparents will also be encouraged to adopt a book for their
grandchild. They can purchase their grandchild's book of choice and
write their names on a bookplate. The grandchild will be able to
check out his or her book first from the library. DeJarnette also
needs volunteers to greet grandparents at the entrance and direct
them.
Old Business
Marcoux reported the cafeteria problems have improved and parents are paying their meal money.
McCallen added that on Tuesday some new equipment would be installed in the library. Next year a live remote will enable Glenwood to broadcast videos, DVD's and broadband to all the classrooms.
New Business
Mrs. VanHull sent a letter requesting money for the reading program. The Reading For All Program has been such a success that more books are needed. Glenwood also needs science and social studies books for a new bookroom to supplement these programs. Book sets cost from $27 - $50 for six books. Lynda Marcoux made a motion for the PTO to send $300 to Mrs. VanHull for the Reading For All books. Jennifer Melton seconded the motion. All were in favor of passing this motion. DeJarnette will notify Mrs. VanHull.
Shugart suggested recruiting a garden club or starting one up to take care of flowers and bushes surrounding the building, especially the entrance. Jessica Bivens volunteered to head up a group of people to work on this project.
It was also mentioned that the date for the Spring Picnic will be Thursday night, May 4th.
There was no door prize this month.
Upcoming PTO Dates:
The only upcoming event that does not have a chairperson or a scheduled date is Cubs on Track. Missy McCallen explained what was involved with coordinating this event. Mrs. Ridener will work closely with the chairperson. After discussion was held Jessica Bivens volunteered to chair this event. The event will be held on May 11th (May 12th will be the rain date).
This month's door prize was a Big Ed's T-shirt. Missy McCallen was the winner! Congratulations! :
Meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
